Claudine HERMANN-RODRIGUES Full-time professor at Ecole Polytechnique Women, sciences, physics Mél : claudine.hermann@polytechnique.fr french version ABSTRACT
Claudine Hermann is since 1980 deputy director of the Laboratory of Physics of Condensed Matter and a full-time professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in France since 1992. Honoured by many prestigious distinctions in her field, she is also the first woman to have ever reached this position at the Ecole Polytechnique. She has been representing France since 1999 at the Helsinski group of Women and Science at Directorate General Research of the European Union. Author of 75 referred publications and editor of the Journal de Physique, Paris (1990-1997), Claudine Hermann is also the co-founder and president of the French association, Femmes et Sciences (Women and Science).
She has mainly worked in the field of optical properties of solids, especially optical pumping of semiconductors, negative electron affinity photoemission, near-field microscopy and magneto-optics. In the 70's, she worked with IBM, USA, where she studied the low dimensional compound TaS3 by Raman effect, and the resonant Raman scattering and polariton effect on the CdSe semiconductor. During the 80's her activity combined optical pumping and negative electron affinity, a technique based on lowering the semiconductor work function by a surface treatment, thus allowing visible photoemission. More recently, she has shifted her interest to near-field optical microscopy, particularly in the case of nanometric noble metal/ferromagnetic sandwiches.
Claudine Hermann holds the following distinctions : Officer of the Order of Merit (2001), Officer of the Order of the Academic Palms (distinction related to teaching) (1998) and Knight of the Order of the French Legion of Honour (1996).

- Post-doctoral position at Thomas J. Watson Research Center, IBM, Yorktown Heights, N.Y. , USA (1977-1978)
Distinctions :
