HOW CAN I.T. HELP TRAINING FOR WOMEN, SOME EXEPERIENCES IN FINLAND New information technologies are changing every sector of society, and transforming women's work and women's lives. We are seeing significant changes from women's traditional work to work based on modern technology; from communicating within personal communities to virtual communities; from traditional job gendering to new perspectives on "who does what."
The type of cyberculture women are creating - and the barriers they face - have been widely researched. Now we have to put forward concrete proposals for increasing women's engagement with the new communications technologies. It is essential reading for students and academics in sociology of science, communications and cultural studies, development and women's studies, as well as those with an interest in the newly emerging cyberspace.
A long series of information initiatives to promote learning, information exchange and networking for women have been created in Finland - a leading country in the world!
AcaFemica - On and Up by Internet AcaFemica is directed to academic women. The students were expected to have basic IT skills as well as access to a PC. The training is based on distance learning via the IT.
The objectives of AcaFemica are to enhance women's employment opportunities by providing new possibilities to establish themselves in the entrepreneurial environment and to form a national and possibly an international network of specialist concultancy teams. The network offers the SMEs specialist services via the Internet. AcaFemica supports SMEs by flexibly providing them cost-effective services.
The Internet is the corner stone in the training process. Along with the training material, links to search further information and additional material have been distributed via the Internet.
