WOMEN in MOVEMENT, transport by women updated: august 2005 Women account for half the population and two thirds of users of public transportation. Despite this, there are almost totally absent form the transport professional world, whether in the ranks of decision-makers (as elected representatives, companies, civil servants or experts, etc...), or among those who undertake transport. Even in user associations, women are very distinctly the minority!
This observation was the reason behing the creation of the association "WOMEN in MOVEMENT, transport in the feminine" during the Congress of the Grouping of Authorities Responsible for Transport (GART) on the theme "Who decides?" in Nantes (France), 1993.
The association takes action so that women may be able to make their point of view heard in the world of public transport, but also in order that public transport is included when the role of women is considered in country or city development.
The association has taken action in various fields: professional practice, organisation of national colloquia, speeches at international colloquia, articles in the specialist press, contacts with those with responsability for questions of womenís equality.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Very little statistical information on women and public transport was available, whether this related to the presence of women in the transport professions or womenís habits in travelling. Our action therefore is related to improving the system for collection and use of statistics.
From 1995 :
- National statistics on urban public transport networks will supply data on the employment of women in the networks
-Surveys of households on their travelling habits, undertaken in most large conurbations, will be used systematically with distribution according to sex
-Recommendations are being made for local surveys also to be conceived and used to improve knowledge of the behaviour of women and men
-Research into the specific needs of women in the public transport field has begun under the aegis of GART (Groupement des Autorités Responsables des Transports).ACTIONS IN NATIONAL COLLOQUIA: women meetings
